In the centre of the picturesque village of Smarden, backing on to the 800 year old St Michael’s church, is the Flying Horse.
A good example of a traditional rural community pub, the Flier as it’s known locally, prides itself on offering hearty meals as well as a good range of beers and wines.
Its pretty terraced garden at the front of the building is the ideal place from which to watch the world go by on sunnier days. In winter, a roaring inglenook fire keeps everyone warm.
The centuries old pub, which is fully beamed, is thought to get its name from a long defunct racecourse which stood opposite until 1863.
For those touring the Weald of Kent, Leeds and Bodiam Castles, Sissinghurst Castle Gardens, Great Dixter Gardens, Godinton House Gardens, Biddenden Vineyard, Headcorn Air Museum, The Kent & East Sussex Railway, woodland walks and the Kino Digital Cinema are all within easy reach of Smarden.
