The Charles Dickens

A pub serving food with Sky TV in Southwark.

The Charles Dickens is in the London Borough of Southwark where Real Ale has always had a strong tradition and The Charles Dickens continues this.
Good Real Ale was served here since the early 19th Century and today we proudly offer a selection of six Real Ales from Scotland, Wales and the West Country, changing daily. The cosy, rustic atmosphere of the warm and welcoming interior also encourages you to indulge in the delicious à la Carte menu for lunch, dinner and Sunday Roast. The menu changes along with the seasons, and is freshly prepared by Chef Murilo. Seating on the pavement area and the garden is provided, weather permitting.

Oscar Wilde 3.7 The Mighty Oak Brewing Company

Champion Beer of Britain 2011 Champion Mild of Britain 2006

Tasting Notes: A wonderfully mellow, nutty, morish dark mild. Brewed using Maris Otter Pale, Crystal and Black malts and gently hopped with Challenger.

Runner 4.0 Trumans

Runner was traditionally the name of a brewery's easy drinking session beer - avaliable to everyone, everywhere. Truman's Runner is our interpretation of this custom.

Tasting Notes: Chestnut brown in colour and brewed with a complex selection of five different malts and three hops, gives a spicy, fruity aroma flavours of chocolate, orange and a smooth bitterness. Runner is packed full of flavour yet remains unashamedly easy drinking.

VPA 4.0 Portobello Brewing

Most people don’t appreciate how important water is to making beer. The clear liquid you begin with can have a dramatic influence on the amber (or golden, inky or pale) nectar that is the final brew.

Tasting Notes: Historically this meant that certain areas were known for brewing certain beers. For instance, Dublin has very alkaline water, which is perfect for dark ales & stouts - but it can’t compete with the high calcium content of the water around Pilsen for pale lagers and pilsners.
