The Hospital Arms

A pub serving food with Sky TV in Colchester.

Over time, the pub became known as Ward 9 by doctors and staff alike, seemingly to allay suspicion amongst patients that their care was in the hands of drunkards. The hospital ceased its main business in the 1980s with the building of a new hospital in Turner Road, making it opportune to change the pub’s name to the Tap & Spile. In the late 1990s, it reverted to the Hospital Arms.

Adnams Southwold Bitter 3.7 Adnams

Southwold Bitter is a beautiful copper-coloured beer, late and dry-hopped with Fuggles for a distinctive, lingering hoppiness. Brewed with the finest East Anglian Pale Ale malt barley, sourced locally to the brewery. We use Fuggles hops which we add late in the boil to preserve the herbal flavours of this traditional English hop. We add more Fuggles to each cask so that the flavour of the hops infuses into the beer. It’s a perfect 3.7% abv in cask and 4.1% abv in bottle and can.

Birra Moretti 4.6 Heineken

The ultimate Italian lager since 1859, Birra Moretti’s special blend of high quality hops creates a smooth, full bodied beer with wholemeal bread top notes which are cut by a delicate citrus note.

Tasting Notes: It is a bottom fermented beer with a golden colour. This colouring is a result of the type of malt used in brewing. Its alcohol content is 4.6% alcohol by volume. It is not a strong beer and is therefore perfect for drinking at lunch, at dinner or for evenings out with friends

Cruzcampo 4.4 Heineken

Cruzcampo is a pilsner style Spanish lager founded in Seville in 1904. Brewed with subtle hoppy notes, fruity characteristics and finished with Cruzcampo bitterness. It’s a fresh, crisp, easy drinking beer and a favourite amongst Spanish locals.
