The very name of this pub is part of the fabric of British history and reaches back to Robert Cecil, the first Earl of Salisbury who is said to have been the wisest man in Tudor politics. It was Cecil's 19th descendant, the third Marquis of Salisbury and Queen Victoria's favourite Prime Minister, from whom the site of the tavern was originally leased in 1892. Prior to this the pub had been known as The Coach & Horses and Ben Caunt's Head and was famous for promoting prize fighting. A much friendlier and welcoming atmosphere is assured these days.
