The earliest mention of the Inn was as The Black Lyon in 1638 when Henry Townsend was the landlord. In 1790 Joseph Spittle changed the name to the Crown Inn.William VI while in residence at the Royal Pavilion entertained at the Crown.
Lewes dates from Saxon times when it was established as a port on the River Ouse where the trading routes passed. Much of Lewes is Georgian but it is built upon its original medieval layout. Sightseeing and Attractions include The Anne of Cleves House and Museum, the Lewes Castle built in Nirman times and the Barbican Museum, Lewes Priory Remains, Southover Grange and more. There is an abundance of small shops selling fashions and crafts as well as coffe bars, tea rooms and restaurants. Lewes is the ideal touring base for the beautiful surrounding countryside and coastline, including attractions such as Glyndebourne, the South Downs, Plumpton Races. The city of Brighton and hove is about 8 miles away, with frequent bus and train services.
