The pub has traded since at least 1680 making it the oldest public house in Gloucester.
Half of the pub was once a tailors house where Beatrix Potter heard the tale about the tailor which later became her childrens book "the tailor of gloucester".
The building is 3 storeys from the inside but 4 from the outside of the top three windows the left and right one are fakes and the middle one only opens to a loft which is accessible by a door 10ft up a wall on the top floor.
The outside is often pointed out by tourists as the pub is mentioned in many local books.
