The Anchor Inn is one of the oldest buildings in Salterforth, dating back to 1655, built on the pack horse way used by Salters & Drovers.
Between 1770 & 1816 the Leeds Liverpool Canal was excavated & since the Traveller's Rest, as the hostelry was then known, was below the water line, a new inn was erected on top of the old one, and renamed The Canal Tavern. Due to dampness of the original building, built of limestone, stalagmites & stalactites grew in the cellar, & can still be viewed today.
The Inn as you see it today was renamed at the turn of the century The Anchor Inn
