It's the bar with the longest history in St Andrews which, according to the staff, makes it the most experienced and thus the greatest. Somewhere near this site from as early as the 12th century, enterprising locals were serving up gruel to pilgrims as they entered the West Port. The 'pat' from which the pub takes its name was the pot they served it from. The current building dates from 1902, but there's been a hostelry here since 1580. All of this has led to the most traditional and homely of bars, the kind of place you can set your clock by the regulars. Popular also with postgraduate students, real ale drinkers and tourists, The Whey Pat guarantees the friendliest of visits.
